Surroundings

You probably do not want to spend all your leisure time in the spa – look around and explore the surroundings. SOOS – natural reservation – peat bog with mud volcanoes.

SOOS
A large peat bog and moorland territory covering the area of 221ha with discharge of mineral water and carbon dioxide. The most remarkable phenomenon of this area is without doubt the presence of mofette – mud volcanoes – and the unique landscape dominated by the sediments of diatomaceous earth and crystallized salt, and providing shelter for rare species of flora and fauna.

Komorni Hurka – the favourite place of Johann Wolfgang Goethe – is located at a distance of just 3 km from the town. Close your eyes and imagine how the local landscape may have looked like a few thousand years ago. It was an active volcano at that time! Keeping the same direction you will arrive at a romantic Ostroh castle (Seeberg) – but the spa will still be within your eyeshot!

Seeberg (Ostroh)
Originally a Romanesque castle which belonged to ministerial residencies of the Imperial falc in Cheb was later and modified in Gothic style. At that time it belonged to the town of Cheb. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed and left in ruins. At the beginning of the 20th century, fortunately, it was restored to an excellent place of tourist attraction, housing a nice restaurant. The premises of the castle houses an exposition devoted to the development of interior design and furniture in the 19th century, and to the history of porcelain. An interesting part is also the so–called „black kitchen“. Museum in Frantiskovy Lazne is now in charge of the castle exposition, popular architecture and the ethnic collections.

When you decide for a whole day trip, you can visit the charming town of Cheb – one of the oldest Czech towns. Then maybe you would like to find yourself on the shoulder of Slavkovsky les (Slavkov Forest), in the town of Kynzvart. The shadow of Chancellor Metternich, the voices of ladies of the court as well as click–clack of manor coaches – all this is hidden in this beautiful Empire château!

Cheb
This significant historical and cultural centre of the region is situated on the important traffic route between Prague and Nuremberg. The stone castle of Margraves of Vohburg which had been built already at the beginning of the 12th century was turned into a splendid Romanesque palace during the reign of Frederick I Barbarossa. The palace has been preserved to a large extent until now. The municipal historical reservation contains a unique collection of Gothic and Baroque ecclesiastical as well as town buildings.

Slavkov Forest
Slavkov forest Protected Landscape Area occupies a territory of 610 sqkm. An important part of Slavkovsky les is the vast area of raised bog, which along with the complex of woods, creates a huge natural water reservoir.

Kynžvart Chateau
Originally a castle which had been abandoned and left in ruins at the end of 17th century, was turned into an admirable Baroque chateau by landholder Filip E. Metternich. Its original structure had been preserved until 1839, after that it was completely rebuilt for Prince Klemens Wenzel von Metternich, a German – Austrian politician and statesman and one of the most important European diplomats of the 19th century. This chateau is a rare example of representative rural residence of the Viennese Classical and Empire style.

Finally, a more ancient past awaits in the town of Bečov with its mysterious Shrine of St. Maurus or in the town of Loket offering us a fabulous medieval Loket castle. Or you can just explore the beautiful area of nature reservation Kladská or make a relaxing trip through nice forests near Tepla Monastery. Simply, do anything what will make your spa stay even more enjoyable!

The Shrine of St Maurus
After ten years of restoration works, the chateau in Becov nad Teplou can boast about its renovated cultural and historic jewel – the Shrine of St Maurus from the beginning of 13th century. The shrine is rare evidence of Romanesque goldsmith's art of outstanding artistic and graphic quality and it is the only relic of its kind on the territory of the Czech country.

Loket Castle
Originally a Romanesque stone castle dating to the period of King Premysl I (around 1230). The royal castle became an administrative centre of the entire Loket region and its significance was increased during the reign of Luxembourg dynasty. At that time, it was a site where many important political negotiations took place as well as a residence of Charles IV. The castle was extended during the reign of Vaclav IV (Wenceslaus) and further altered in the 16th century by the Šlik family who acquired the manor of Loket in trust. Around 1822, the castle was altered to suit the needs of an archive and prison and, as a result, it lost a large number of interesting architectonic features.

Kladská Nature Reservation
The village situated at 814 above sea level was designed in 1875 by Prince Schönburg. It was to remind of the style of Swiss wooden log cabins.
